Spain/Portugal Day 53 – La Rabida, Huelva

Day 53 – Monday 19 Feb 18 – La Rabida near Huelva

Delilah plus two woke up to sea mist this morning. It was the day we were to move on to pastures new so we showered and drove round to the motorhome aire services to top up with water and to empty toilet and grey waste.

Unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to bid farewell to Paul and Cheryl in the motorhome next door as they were not up and about when we left at 10.15am.

We drove via Jerez de la Frontera to fill up with autogas and then up past Seville, into Lidl to stock up with food and onto La Rabida near Huelva.

We were very pleasantly surprised on arrival as the stopover looked lovely. A heron took flight as we pulled up.

We relaxed for an hour and then went for a walk to explore. There was a man in a carriage with horses practising his turning and fancy steps for the horses.

About 100m away is the river Tinto.

We walked up to the monument celebrating Christopher Colombus’s voyages to the Americas and saw this intricate ‘Calendario Azteca.’

The monument at the top of the walkway looked impressive in the evening sun.

There were tiled insets in the pavement on each side as you walked up the hill.

There was also a statue commemorating the fact that Christopher Colombus took mass in the monastery before his voyage to the Americas.

La Rabida monastery is a well visited tourist attraction but it was closed at that time in the evening. We could still hear the bells ringing at 8pm at night.
